Heute Nacht ist nach dem Mondkalender Neumond, Monatsanfang.

Für die Juden, deren Jahreszählung nach dem Mond gerichtet ist beginnt heute Abend das jüdische Neujahr, Rosh Hashana. Es ist ein Fest der Besinnung, der Rückkehr zum Guten an dem sich jeder und jede selber und gegenseitig wünscht, ein gutes Jahr im "Buch des Schicksals" eingeschrieben zu bekommen.

Die Moslems werden nach dem Neumond Ausschau halten und wenn die schwache Sichel des Neumonds am schwarzen Himmel entdeckt wird, dann wird für alle Moslems verkündet, dass der Ramadan, der Fastenmonat begonnen hat. Die Moslems fasten (tagsüber) einen ganzen Monat, um sich mit den Armen und Bedürftigen zu solidarisieren.

Ich denke die Werte der Besinnung für bessere menschliche Taten der Solidarität mit den Armen und Bedürftigen können wir alle miteinander übernehmen.

Wenn wir diese mit den Wünschen und Zielen des gestrigen internationalen Friedenstag der UNO verbinden und dies alles miteinander wahr werden liessen, dann dürften wir einem besseren Jahr entgegenschauen......

Deshalb wünsche ich Euch allen, liebe FreundeInnen von Neve Shalom/Wahat al Salam ein gutes glückliches, und vor allem friedliches Neues
(jüdisches) Jahr und den Moslems unter uns einen guten Ramadan.

Both, Rosh Hashana and Ramadan, begin this night, with the New Moon; both, the Jewish and the Moslem calendar, follow the circle of the moon.

The Jewish Rosh Hashana is a holiday which suggests some self-reflection and the search for the good part within ourselves. We strive to improve ourselves so that we, and the people close to us, get enlisted in the "book of life" of the year to come.

Ramadan also begins with the New Moon; it is a fasting month as an act of solidarity with the poor.

People of all religions can easily identify with the wish for amendment and with the solidarity with the poor.

I would therefore like to join the good wishes of Evi from Neve Shalom/Wahat al Salam for a good and peaceful New Year for the Jews and for a good Ramadan for the Moslems.

The Jews are now celebrating ROSH HASHANA TOWA - the Jewish New Year.

Shana Towa means: a happy New Year.

For the Jews, Friday, September 22nd of this year (2006) is the eve of the Jewish NEW YEAR - the year 5667 - called "ROSH HASHANA". Jewish holidays always begin on the evening before, and last until the sunset, of the actual holiday.

The Jewish calendar follows the cycle of the moon, and this is the reason why the Jewish New Year does not coincide with a fix date of the Gregorian calendar.

10 days after ROSH HASHANA Jews celebrate YOM KIPPOR, the Day of Atonement. This is the day to make PEACE - with GOD, with your friends, with your enemies and with yourself. You pray GOD to forgive your sins and ask him to write you in the book of life. And you promise to do better in the New Year than you did before....

I personally cherish Yom Kippor, which is a day of fasting and praying - or, if you are not that religious, of contemplation and meditation. There is always place to do better in your attitude and your dealing with those around you. We can use Yom Kippor to reconsider, to judge and to improve our attitudes, our relations and actions towards others and even to ourselves.

I therefore want to ask everybody, kids or adults, Jews, Moslems or Christians, to forgive me for anything I did, willingly or unwillingly, that upset you or that hurt your feelings. I shake your hand and send you all a BIG HUG and a hearty wish for PEACE
